The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

The first of Stieg Larssson's thriller trilogy makes its eagerly awaited big screen debut.

A publishing phenomenon, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first book in the best-selling Millennium trilogy written by the Swedish journalist and author Stieg Larsson. Now adapted for the big screen in its native Sweden, the film version has gone on to win awards and smash box office records around Europe and is now set to repeat this success in the UK.

As fans of the novel will know, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a tense, gripping thriller that neatly turns the conventions of the genre on its head, giving us a kick-ass anti-heroine in the form of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Facing prison time for slander, discredited journalist Mikael Blomkvist is hired by a reclusive industrialist for one last job; to solve a long unresolved family disappearance. Aided by the mysterious and troubled Lisbeth the two uncover a dark world of brutality, deception and ritualistic murder. On their own and not knowing who to trust, the pair's attempt to uncover the truth leads to a fight for their very survival...

A heady mix of intrigue, murder, violence and romance set against a wintry Scandanavian backdrop, this is a hugely enjoyable, darkly gripping yarn.

With film sequels planned for release later in 2010 (The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest) the Milliennium Trilogy could be one of the biggest must-sees of the new decade.

Director: Niels Arden Opley
Cast: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Lena Endre

Next Show: Sun, 05 Sep 2010 15:30:00
Book Now: https://ebooking.qub.ac.uk/queensfilmtheatre/gateway.aspx?E=N&QL=S1878|P7988|VQF1|GShowDatesCombo.aspx
Full Details: http://www.queensfilmtheatre.com/films/thegirlwiththedragontattoo/

Acclaimed director Stephen Frears brings Posy Simmonds' comic strip to life.

Based on Posy Simmonds' beloved graphic novel of the same name (which was itself inspired by Thomas Hardy's classic Far From the Madding Crowd) this wittily modern take on the romantic English pastorale is a far cry from Hardy's Wessex.

Tamara Drewe's present-day English countryside-stocked with pompous writers, rich weekenders, bourgeois bohemians, a horny rock star, and a great many Buff Orpington chickens and Belted Galloway cows-is a much funnier place. Once a shy and unattractive teenager from a small rural idyll, Tamara's past catches up with her when she returns the village and has to face an old flame.

" Frears brings his droll, witty touch to material that never pretends to be too deep." - The Daily Telegraph

MON 20 SEPT FOLLOWING THE 6.30PM SCREENING OF TAMARA DREWE

Bronagh Gallagher in Conversation

Tamara Drewe marks Bronagh Gallagher's second collaboration with Stephen Frears, and provides an excellent excuse for us to invite her to QFT to hear a tale or two. It also allows us to give Bronagh's hometown of Derry a firm handshake and a pat on the back, metaphorically speaking, for winning the bid to be the first ever UK City of Culture in 2013.

Bronagh's film career has been eclectic, to say the least. A standout performance in Alan Parker's The Commitments kicked things off in grand style, paving the way for credits including Tristan and Isolde, Middletown, Last Chance Harvey, Malice in Wonderland, Pulp Fiction and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.

Bronagh will recount stories from her award-winning career, and possibly talk about Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, if you ask her nicely.

Director: Stephen Frears
Cast: Gemma Arterton , Dominic Cooper , Tamsin Greig , Bronagh Gallagher

Next Show: Fri, 17 Sep 2010 18:30:00
Book Now: https://ebooking.qub.ac.uk/queensfilmtheatre/gateway.aspx?E=N&QL=S2273|P7842|VQF1|GShowDatesCombo.aspx
Full Details: http://www.queensfilmtheatre.com/films/tamara-drewe/

Shot in the streets and alleys of Rome, De Sica uses a real-life environment and cast non-professional actors.

To complement the Peroni Nastro Azzurro: Accademia del Film series of masterclasses, we have chosen three classic Italian films which embody the spirit of Italian cinema. Masterclass participants will receive complimentary tickets for these films and additional tickets can be booked as normal using the link below.

Federico Fellini's 1960 masterpiece remains something of a midway point between his Il Maestro's early neo-realist works and the pure art of his later films. While La Dolce Vita features elements of both, it stands alone as a truly unique creation from a great filmmaker at the height of his powers.

La Dolce Vita sees Marcello Mastroianni's jaded gossip columnist flit and flirt his way through Rome in a series of vivid, impressionistic episodes, leaping from one visual show-stopper to another - not least that iconic scene featuring Anita Ekberg and the Trevi fountain. What's it all about? Life, death, love, art, class and celebrity, for starters - it's a film ahead of its time, and utterly timeless. Let's make this very simple: La Dolce Vita demands to be seen by any and everyone who loves cinema. Viva Fellini!

Director: FEDERICO FELLINI
Cast: MARCELLO MASTROIANNI, ANITA EKBERG, ANOUK AIMEE

Next Show: Sun, 19 Sep 2010 14:00:00
Book Now: https://ebooking.qub.ac.uk/queensfilmtheatre/gateway.aspx?E=N&QL=S2278|P7858|VQF1|GShowDatesCombo.aspx
Full Details: http://www.queensfilmtheatre.com/films/ladolcevita/
