The Red Shoes
Restored and digitally remastered for a new generation, The Red Shoes is a truly magical film experience. One of Powell and Pressburger's best-loved films, The Red Shoes interweaves the story of an ambitious young ballerina, Vicky (Moira Shearer), with that of The Red Shoes ballet (inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale) which forms the centerpiece of the film and is one of the most dazzling flights of fantasy in British cinema.
In the original tale a young peasant girl becomes bewitched by a pair of magical ballet shoes and dances herself to death. In The Red Shoes, Vicky falls under the spell of the tyrannical, Svengali-like ballet impresario Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook). Torn between her love of ballet and her love for a young composer, Julian, Vicky is driven to a final desperate act…
Ravishingly shot and with a wonderful musical score The Red Shoes is a treat for all the family and a perfect film for the festive season.
