Telstar
(Telstar the Joe Meek Story)
A legendary figure in the history of pop, Joe Meek was one of a kind. A true visionary, he developed new techniques in recording, made groundbreaking hit singles and became the foremost independent pop producer working in Britain during the late-50s and early-60s. He was also madly eccentric, paranoid and openly gay at a time when homosexuality was illegal. His wild life led to an even more bizarre death - and only added to the legend.
Film introduction and disscusion: Mon 22 June at 6.45pm - Telstar - the Joe Meek Story by Marcus Smith, Open University associate tutor.
Written and directed by actor Nick Moran (and adapted from his own stage play), Telstar is dominated by Con O’Neill (reprising his stage role), who gives a tour de force performance as the warped genius. Funny, touching and, at times, fittingly eccentric it also features some truly great music including Johnny Remember Me, Have I The Right, Just Like Eddie and the indomitable Telstar.
