Tales from the Golden Age

12A

A comic, darkly ironic look at the idiocies of daily life in a dictatorship. Set in Romania under the Ceaucescu regime, Tales from the Golden Age uses a portmanteau structure based on five urban myths to explore the absurdity of life under Communism, all with a healthy dose of humour.

Starting with The Legend of the Official visit in which a rural village is bemused by the ridiculous demands of bureaucrats the film goes on to present tales around the manipulation of the media, the monotony of the Romanian diet and the growth of free enterprise culture.

Conceived and scripted by Cristian Mungiu (Four Months, Three Weeks, Two Days) this is an unusual, stylish and amusing look at a dark time in history.
