Growing up in Harlem,16-yearold Claireece Precious Jones (Sidibe) endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Not only is she suffering from obesity and illiteracy but she has been constantly raped and impregnated twice by her father, and has suffered years of mental, physical and sexual abuse from her mother.

Precious decides to get away from the monster she calls her mother (a terrifying performance from comedian Mo'Nique) and seek a better life for her children and herself. Precious is certainly a tough watch but it is ultimately an uplifting and powerful film, gaining a well-deserved six Oscar nominations.
