Unite Against Hate: Made in Britain

R18

QFT, in partnership with the Unite against Hate campaign, presents this series of monthly film screenings and discussions focusing on issues of prejudice and hate crime.

As powerful today as it was when it first screened on TV back in 1983, Made in Britain was made by the renowned director Alan Clarke and features Tim Roth in his screen debut as Trevor, an incandescently violent, racist skinhead. Trevor is a bright boy who sees himself as the victim of an authoritarian state and believes he can beat the system with belligerence and violent assertion of his white heritage. Unlike the typical stereotype of the skinhead as a mindless thug, Trevor is intelligent and articulate which makes his inevitable descent into a life of crime even more tragic.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion:

Chair:

William Crawley, BBC journalist and broadcaster

Panellists:

Matthew Collins is the Director of the Searchlight Educational Trust and The Northern Ireland Correspondent for the antifascist magazine Searchlight. Part of his work with SET involves an advisory role with the London Probation Service on hate crime and he is co-Editor of the 'Signs of Hate' manual used widely within the police, prison and probation services.

Jolena Flett has been working with NICEM for six years supporting victims of racist violence and harassment, conducting anti-racism training, presenting awareness raising workshops and working with Black and Minority Ethnic groups on issues of quality assurance and good governance.

Dr Khanyisela Moyo, lecturer at the Transitional Justice Institute of the University of Ulster, she is also a member of the management committee of the Afro-Caribbean Support Organisation NI.
