French Film
With a title that is something of a red herring, French Film is not as you might think, French. It is actually an amusing observation on the emotional and sexual mores of contemporary Britain. What is quintessentially Gallic however is the presence on screen of Eric Cantona whose star as an actor is quite clearly on the ascendant.
Set against a backdrop of leafy North London, French Film contrasts the romantic attitudes of two British young couples, both in relationship meltdown, with the amorous musings of Cantona’s French film director; an expert in the ways of l’amour who is being interviewed by one of our protagonists.
With a quirky concept and a great cast including Hugh Bonneville and the always excellent Anne-Marie Duff, French Film is sweet, witty and très Anglais.

What the critics say
The result, however, is uneven: lurching from little-Englander spoofery to heartfelt emotionalising and back again - often in the same scene.
