Barbara

Set in the repressive regime of 1980's East Germany, Barbara is a coolly dispassionate thriller that is nevertheless intensely gripping. Barbara is a doctor who has been transferred from her prestigious post in Berlin to a small country hospital. At her new workplace, Barbara is viewed with suspicion but is encouraged by her colleague André not to be so ‘separate'. Barbara is all too wary, however, and has no illusions about André's status as a Stasi informer. Especially as she has a lover in the West who wants her to join him...

When Barbara becomes involved in the life of her patient Stella, she is ultimately forced to make a decision about her own fate, in a denouement that is subtle but utterly compelling.
