35 Shots of Rum
(35 Rhumms)
It’s been almost a decade since the wonderful Beau Travail graced the big screen but with this, her latest film, Claire Denis looks set to achieve similar acclaim.
Wonderfully simple, yet marvellously profound, 35 Shots of Rum sketches the shifting yet tender relationship between widower Lionel (Alex Descas), his teenage daughter Joséphine (Mati Diop) and the network of friends, neighbours and lovers that encircle them.
Lionel is a man of few words - his life with Joséphine is one of routine, trust and enjoyment of each other’s company. Unwanted change appears, however when Lionel’s colleague Rene retires and Lionel is forced to confront his own advance into old age...
A magical evocation of the ties that bind, Denis’ signature sensitivity to music is also beautifully demonstrated, with original compositions by Tindersticks. Warm, soulful and absolutely unmissable.
