The following QFT Education film events are part of a rolling programme which includes a selection of educational screenings which support the national curriculum and can be arranged at dates and times to suit individual schools.

Film screenings, workshops and film events can be tailored to suit individual schools' needs and can include an introduction, workshops, post-film discussions / quizzes and teaching packs specially designed to support the national curriculum.

Tales from Earthsea (PG), 2006

In the land of Earthsea , the very balance of the universe is threatened. Teenage Prince Arren - compelled by forces he cannot understand - kills his own father, steals the mystical royal sword, and escapes. Trekking the countryside, he meets a wise and powerful wizard, who is on a quest to explain why the balance of the world is slipping. The two become travel companions and together confront the henchmen of the evil wizard Cob, the source of Earthsea trouble.

This fantasy tale comes from the cult Studio Ghibli, which brought us Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Based on the unique series of books by Ursula Le Guin, this enchanting story marks the first feature for Goro Miyazaki, son of the celebrated director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away).

Cave of the Yellow Dog (U), 2005

A Mongolian nomad family find themselves in disagreement when the oldest daughter, Nansal, finds a small dog and brings it home. Believing that it is responsible for attacking his sheep, her father refuses to allow her to keep it.

Suitable for: Key Stage 2 and 3 Literacy, Geography, Religious Education and P.S.H.E. and Citizenship. Teaching materials available.

March of the Penguins (U), 2005

A fascinating film about the emperor penguins and their annual journey to their traditional breeding ground. This film covers the entire year's cycle of the penguins' lives and is skillfully narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Supports KS2 - (looking at life cycles and life processes of animals in Science and Antarctic environments in Geography) - to GCSE level in Geography, Science Literacy, ICT, PSHE and Citizenship, as well as teachers and students of Media Studies. An extensive teaching pack is available for KS2 and 3.

The Witches (PG), 1990

Based on the novel by Roald Dahl. A young boy, recently orphaned, is taken to England by his grandmother. At a hotel in which they are staying, a group of witches have gathered to prepare a plot to rid the world of all children.

Supports film adaptation study at KS2 and 3. Optional post-film book to film adaptation workshop available.

A magical story of the legend which surrounds a small Irish fishing village in the 1940s and its neighbouring island, Roan Inish, a deserted place inhabited only by seals.

Screening followed by workshop available which supports KS2, the study of myths and legends.
